Mural Descriptions

Featured Mural - "A Simpler Place in Time"     A cartography map of the Meadows of Dan community at the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The community's name is credited to one of its earliest English settlers, James Steptoe Langhorne, and comes from the beautiful meadows that abound near the Dan River which flows through the area. The community's motto as posted on the welcoming sign is "A simpler place in time". Meadows of Dan is located along the Crooked Road, Virginia's heritage music trail.
Location: 2554 Jeb Stuart Hwy

Artist Bio: Pepper Martin

Pepper Martin is primarily a portrait artist, but has been known to paint everything from murals to motorcycles. She works mainly in oils and airbrush. She is also an art teacher for Patrick County Public Schools and loves building creativity in her students.

In Pepper's own words:  My husband and I love to ride motorcycles, and one day when we were at a bike show, I was admiring the beautiful paintjobs on these rolling works of art. I though, "I could do that!" I had always wanted to be an artist someday. And so, I entered the world of art. For a while, I dabbled in painting while keeping my day job. It was with the birth of our beautiful daughter, however, that I came to the realization that now was the time to take a leap of faith and be a woman who is fully pursuing her dreams, a woman that my daughter can look up to.

After getting my feet wet with the airbrush, I ventured out to try...
oil painting. The soft, squishy feel of the paints hooked me immediately, and this is where I have stayed. Although entirely self taught, I have had the privilege of taking some wonderful workshops. Plus, I am a voracious reader. I believe you can learn whatever you need to through a book and practice, if you are determined.

Slowly, I have begun to develop my own style. Such an undefined term, really, but I am steadily becoming more and more comfortable in my own skin. Over the last few years, I have taken the opportunity to experiment with many different media and art styles, and while I have found that I am proficient at many different things, only a few call to me. When you are entering the art world, you are advised by well meaning friends and family to paint a certain way, a certain subject. It is only with experience that I have gained the insight that I will only paint my best if I paint what is in MY heart, MY soul.

We have been getting much more traffic around our murals, and a lot of it is due to the publicity from your organization!
Thank you!

I love what you folks are doing. Several years ago we went to Exeter California to see their Mural trail. We spent hours in this little town looking at the murals and trying to find the hidden objects in each. We talked with the towns people, had lunch, shopped in the shops. I love the mural trails, and yours is going to be one of the best. Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Art is everywhere in Asheville! This gorgeous mural of Dolly Parton by Gus Cutty is the newest mural you'll see in town. Gus created the mural with spray paint in 3 days. See it for yourself at Beauty Parade on Haywood Rd in West Asheville.
